" I want them to have fun, " Kam
said of the 13 employees under his supervision.
"There's enough stress. I want it to be
fun to get the work done right, and make sure
they do it in a structured way."
A six-year employee of MDM, Kam is a native
of Cambodia. His family left his homeland while
he was young and spent several years at a camp
in Thailand, before he came to the U.S. in 1985.
He spent time in Chicago and Wisconsin before
settling in Santa Ana, California----where Martin
Door originated---where he graduated from high
school and went to a junior college. He eventually
made his way to Utah, where he started with
Martin Door in 2001.
Kam, 37, worked on the raised panel press,
before changing to the roll former, and eventually
becoming supervisor of that department two years
ago.
"I love it here at Martin Door. This is
the place to help me to establish my home, my
family and my career," Kam said. He earned
his U.S. citizenship in 2002.
Kam credits Larry Martin with giving him a
chance to learn new skills, and expand his ability.
He said ongoing improvements, like SMED (single
minute exchange of die) have helped Martin Door
to build the world's finest door more quickly
and efficiently.
Kam said the diversity among the Martin Door
workforce is also an educational experience
for him.
"As a supervisor you have to adapt to
different people, to different cultures and
to different attitude," he said
Randy and his wife, Mallai, are the parents
of two children.
