Stepping Towards A Brighter Future

Mar. 21, 2006
-Minefield walk led Martin Door employee to U.S.

Each step of his new life means so much to Siv Boun.

He has a vivid memory of how costly his steps have been to get where he is now.

A native of Cambodia, Boun recalls his flight to freedom along with his young daughter and wife in 1979.

In escaping to Thailand, Boun and his family had to walk through a minefield, with foliage up to his waist. Boun carried his young daughter in his arms and brushed aside the foliage in leading his family to freedom. He asked that his wife walk immediately behind him, touching him at all times, so that if something were to happen they would all go at once. Each deliberate step was a step towards a new life.

Siv Boun

Reaching the U.S, Boun made his way to Salt Lake City and then moved to California, before coming back to Utah. He came to Martin Door Manufacturing in 1996. He likes the fit.

“This is my heaven,” Boun said of his situation.

His time in Salt Lake has not been without missteps.

Working for another manufacturer, Siv lost his job, because he asked too many questions and was always looking for ways to improve a process.

That trait made him an immediate asset at Martin Door Manufacturing, according to Larry Martin, vice president of MDM.

Siv Boun keeps a close eye on a Finger Shield™ as it rolls off the press at Martin Door

Larry encourages employee input, especially when it can make a process more efficient.

Taking advantage of the open door policy, Siv has made his mark and helped Martin improve its systems.

“Siv has been a single source for more information on the fabrication floor than any other individual. His ideas have assured that a very difficult to run part, the Finger Shield™, is straight and without flaw,” Larry Martin.

When Martin Door designed the FingerShield™ in 1996, it was Boun who looked over the issue of making sure the shields were just right. He is still doing the same today.

Siv still brings that same exactness to his responsibility in fabrication to make sure each FingerShield™ is right on the mark. “I want to make sure my part is perfect,” he says of his job.
