Lake Says Paperwork Tools Help Company, Customer
Mar. 14 , 2005

SALT LAKE –- A few paperwork tools can save a dealer a mountain of potential problems, a California dealer told participants in the Martin Door dealer conference.

Brace Lake of Mr. Martin Garage Doors of Buena Park, Ca., shared some forms his company has developed to defuse potential problems. He said the tools have helped keep his company out of trouble and help the customer.

Lake characterized a litigious climate in his state and said the forms help the customers deal with potential disappointment from garage floors or frames that are uneven to low headroom in the garage. He also noted how important it is to be thorough in all aspects of the business from scheduling, to follow up to going over details with the customer.

His advice included:

--the importance of proper scheduling. He said he calls the customer three days before an installation and one day before the installation, because rescheduling can be so costly.

--he emphasized the need to have written approval before order and or starting the installation of a door.

---stressing the need for the customer to have a clear garage door/driveway before the installation. He said his firm charges $75 per hour if they have to clear the work area.

---a form that deals with the door opener, and the fact that his company does not provide extension cords, nor endorse their extended use in some electrical connections.

Brace Lake

---advised dealers to sell the complete Martin Door package with a Martin opener. He praised the Martin opener in comparison to another company's opener that he had utilized for a time. He said the only drawback to the Martin opener is its slow operating speed. But he said he merely tells the customer that with its extended range, they can push their remote further away from home to make sure the door is open when they arrive at home.

Brace Lake of Mr. Martin Garage Doors of Buena Park, Ca., shares a moment with Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. while his brother, Don, looks on along with David O. Martin.
